CANBERRA, Aug. 4 () -- This year's Clipsal 500 V8 Supercar race in Adelaide provided a 33.76 million dollars (30.78 million U.S. dollars) boost to the South Australian economy, the state government said on Wednesday.    Australian state Treasurer Kevin Foley said the economic value of the race continued to grow despite the impact of the global financial crisis.    The 2009 event has provided a 33.5 million dollars (30.5 million U.S. dollars) boost to the economy.    Foley said total attendance at the race was also up but the number of visitors from interstate dipped by almost 1,000 to 12,848.    "These remain big numbers in the face of a national dip in international and domestic travel and demonstrate the continued importance of the event to the state's tourism industry," Foley told Australian Associated Press on Wednesday.    "Even with this reduction in visitor numbers, attendance at the Clipsal has continued to grow thanks to the record number of local sports fans that came to see this year's race, bringing total attendance from 272,800 in 2009 to 277,800 this year."    Foley said the race brought excitement and vibrancy to the heart of Adelaide and the government was proud to host what remained the nation's largest domestic motor sport event.    V8 Supercars is a touring car racing category based in Australia and run as an International Series under Federation Internationale de l'Automobile (FIA) regulations.    Special Report: Global Financial Crisis
RIO DE JANEIRO, May 21 () -- An extra 3,000 policemen will help strengthen the security here during the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development next month, the Rio state government said Monday.Police officers and firemen on holiday and off duty will be recruited and receive additional pay during the three-day summit from June 20 to June 22."Off-duty cops used to be called to work during events such as New Year, for example, without receiving extra pay," said Roberto Alzir, superintendent for operational planning at Rio's State Security Secretariat."For the first time we will pay for their extra effort," he said.The federal government will be in charge of the security scheme for the international event, and Rio police will be responsible for the security of the neighboring areas of the conference and parallel event sites."Rio's current situation is much more favorable to hold large events. The Armed Forces will be there because it is an international event organized by the UN," he said.Alzir said some of the shantytowns that are controlled by the police will receive conference participants.The Rio government has stressed that the city has the capacity to host an international event such as the 1992 Earth Summit, which was also held here.
