BANGKOK, May 27 () -- One of the main purposes of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra's visit to Australia is to promote Thai-Australian annual trade, according to the prime minister's official facebook page.On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Thailand and Australia, the prime minister on Saturday flew to Sydney to celebrate and strengthen bilateral ties.It was the first official visit involving a leader from Thailand or Australia in eight years, the prime minister said on her "Yingluck Government Meets the People" weekly talk show on state TV broadcasted on Saturday morning, recorded earlier.During her four-day visit, Yingluck will seek to emphasize " Thailand: Kitchen of the World" policy, to set up language training courses for Thai laborers in Australia and cooperate on alternative energy.Yingluck will sign two memorandums of understanding (MOU) with her Australian counterpart about education and exchange of visits of Thai and Australian parliamentary members.Top executives from various businesses will accompany the premier."During the trip, there are over 60 Thai investors from food, energy, automobile, public health and financial industries accompanying," she said via her facebook.
MALE, Feb. 11 () -- The Maldives' new president Mohammed Waheed Hassan said here on Saturday he would form a multi-party government."I will form a government in a day or two and door is still open for (former president Mohamed Nasheed's) Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to join us."Waheed was responding to Nasheed's allegation that despite four days as the head of state, he was unable to form a government of the Indian Ocean archipelago nation."True I am taking time. But there is an important reason why I am doing that. That is because I want people to come together and I want to form a national (unity) government. I want to keep the door open for MDP to join this dialogue and join this team," Waheed said.He said that the cabinet will include the members from other parties, adding "Nobody from my political party will be given any post in the cabinet."Rejecting Nasheed's call for a snap poll, Waheed said the country was deeply divided and a free and fair election could not be held until the present political crisis was settled.Nasheed threatened that he would continue leading street protest unless an early presidential election was announced."The election is due in 2013. We cannot accept rushed election at this moment," Waheed said. "If we try to force election we might spark conflict in the county."Nasheed claimed he was ousted in a military coup on Tuesday and demanded his successor Waheed to step down and hand over power to the speaker of the parliament for two months before a new presidential poll is called.
NHL jerseysALGIERS, March 26 () -- To reopen the border between Morocco and Algeria, which has been closed for 18 years, requires deeper examination, Moroccan Minister of Communication Mustapha El Khalfi said while visiting Algiers on Monday."The issue of reopening the border requires good preparation and necessary time," El Khalfi was quoted by local APS news agency as saying, adding that the issue is related to the "sovereignty of Algeria."Algiers closed the border with Morocco in 1994, after Rabat started imposing visa entry on Algerian nationals following an attack in the Moroccan city of Marrakech. In August, 1994, two Spanish tourists were killed when gunmen opened fire at the Atlas Asni hotel in Marrakech. While there are allegations that Islamic extremists related to the Algerian militant movement were behind the incident, some Moroccan officials also claim that members of the Algerian security services were behind the attack. The issue of reopening the border has been evoked by the two North African nations, thanks to bilateral efforts to ease up tensions.Algerian Prime Minister Ahmed Ouyahia recently said the land border with Morocco would be reopened "sooner or later.""Things are excellently progressing thanks to exchanging visits and meetings between the two sides, which would lead to warming up the bilateral relations," Ouyahia said. "So, the border will necessarily be reopened."El Khalfi arrived in Algiers on Sunday evening for a three-day visit.
GINOWAN, Japan, May 18 () -- In the thundering buzz of the U.S. helicopters hovering incessantly overhead, frisky schoolchildren were sporting in the afternoon sun on the playground.    The scene, though inharmonious, is a matter of common practice for the pupils in Tutenma Dai 2 Elementary School.    The elementary school is separated by a mere wire fence from the U.S. Marine Corps Futenma air station, where the U.S. military choppers and tanker aircraft have been taking off and landing almost round the clock.    The deafening engine noise disrupts the tranquility of the lives of neighboring residents and greatly affects the schoolchildren, who need a favorable environment for their healthy growth.    "There are more than 700 pupils as well as dozens of preschool children in our school. We need to shoulder the responsibility for the healthy growth of more than 800 lives," said Harumi Chinen, principal of the elementary school, in an interview with  on Tuesday.    "We could not exclude the possibility of any horrific air crash as the U.S. aircraft seem to be soaring overhead all the time," she said, wearing a troubled expression.    Chinen came to Ginowan 30 years ago when she got married at the age of 27, and has been working in the school for 11 years.    As one of the Okinawa locals, Chinen called for an early resolution of the issue. When Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama visited the school early this month, she told him that it is her heartfelt hope that her pupils will regain a safe, quiet and normal environment soon.    The premier, however, did not utter a single word.    Apart from Chinen's school, there are 11 other middle and elementary school nearby that have been suffering from the lingering problem of noise.    "It's the first time that I have seen schoolchildren attending classes in noise as loud and constant as that, and it's incredible, " said Uichiro Shioiri, a reporter from Nishi Nippon Shimbun who made a special trip to Ginowan to look into the issue.    Expressing his concerns over the children, he also voiced hope that the Futenma base will be moved out at an early date.    "The choppers generate such loud noise that we could hardly hear the teacher in class," said a schoolgirl on the campus, who called for the relocation of the base as soon as possible.    "I'm not averse to the noise as I have been accustomed to it," said a boy, who added that he does not care if the base will be moved out or not.    Located at the center of Ginowan City, the Futenma base was surrounded by close and numerous residential and school buildings.    Former U.S. Defense Secretary Donald Ramsfeld was quite impressed by the scene during his visit to the base. It is undoubtedly the most dangerous base in the world, he said.    Hatoyama, whose pre-election pledge was to move the Futemma base out of Okinawa and even Japan entirely, has said on various occasions that the government will strive to settle the relocation problem by the end of May.    However, residents of Okinawa as well as Tokunoshima island in Kagoshima Prefecture, which may also end up bearing some of the burden of hosting the relocated U.S. Marine Corps' Futemma Air Station's operations, are becoming increasingly vocal in their opposition to Hatoyama's relocation plans.    Then when will the children be able to enjoy their childhood under clear and tranquil skies and attend their classes in an environment free from noise and danger?
