NICOSIA, Dec. 23 () -- Cyprus President Demetris Christofias on Wednesday condemned the attack by fanatic Greek Cypriot fans against a Turkish basketball team who played an international match in the Cypriot capital.Christofias, who is also the Greek Cypriot community leader, said what some "so-called fans" had done on Tuesday night created problems for Cyprus and fostered "Turkish propaganda" against Greek Cypriots. The Greek Cypriot Apoel defeated guest team Pinar Karsiyaka from Turkey 82-80 in FIBA's EuroChallenge Cup Group G game, but both teams were eliminated due to results of other matches.Turkish basketballers said the Tuesday night game went quite well but after the match, they suddenly became the target of what looked like an "organized attack" by Greek Cypriot fanatics. Plastic chairs were seen hurled in the stadium during the post match violence. No Turkish players were injured as Greek Cypriot police prevented Apoel fans from storming their locker room where they took shelter, said police. The Turkish team was later escorted to their hotel. However, a conditioner of the Turkish team later showed his bandaged left hand to Turkish television channel NTV, which he said was wounded by stone hurled by Greek Cypriot fanatics.United Nations peacekeeping forces in Cyprus also sent officers to their hotel at the request of Turkish and Turkish Cypriot authorities, according to Turkish media.Violence related to sport games has increased in Cyprus in recent years. Turkey, who sent troops in 1974 in response to a coup by Greek army officers and occupied northern Cyprus since then, has been an arch rival of the Greek Cypriot south, which is under the effective control of the internationally recognized Republic of Cyprus.
BAKU, Azerbaijan, July 1 () -- To laymen and women, it is sometimes if not always hard to differentiate competitor sports from spectator sports. That's because sometimes it is difficult to separate the two, like, in the case of taekwondo.Taekwondo is a competitor sport because it is the very first of the various schools of martial arts to become an official Olympic competition, though only since 2000.Taekwondo has also been a spectator sport, for long and very long, because around the world lots of people have been amazed and enchanted by the inwardly and outwardly encouraging shouts, the high kicking, the turning kicks and the boards - and even bricks - and tiles-smashing kicks of taekwondo practitioners, be they Asians, Europeans, Americans, Africans or Oceanians. No wonder taekwondo has been claimed as the world's most popular martial art school in term of the number of countries and regions where it is learned and practised and in term of the number of practitioners in these countries and regions.Originated in the Korean peninsula and now the national sport of the Republic of Korea, taekwondo can be coarsely understood as a martial art of combat and self-defense with both feet and fists. A closer look at the competition rules, people will find out its speciality.Of the four one-on-one body-contact competitor sports in the modern Olympic Games, taekwondo and boxing are both about sparring, with the former resorting to feet much more than fists whereas the latter to fists only. 1 2 1 2
