HANOI, Feb. 15 () -- Vietnam claimed the first patient who was infected by swine influenza virus (H3N2) in April 2011 and was re-confirmed by the World Health Organization (WHO) on January 10, 2012.The news was announced here on Wednesday by Dr. Nguyen Thanh Duong, deputy director of the Vietnam Preventive Medicine Department, under the Ministry of Health (MOH).According to the report, the patient was a 2-year-old girl from southern Long An province, who was treated at the No. 1 Children Hospital in April 2011 and later got recovered. She was confirmed then by the southern influenza supervisory network as infected by swine influenza virus H3N2.On January 10, 2012, the testing result was re-confirmed by the American Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) under WHO standard criteria. The MOH instructed the national influenza supervisory network to enhance the check-up and timely discover the possible H3N2, as well as closely coordinate with the WHO Vietnam Office to monitor this type of disease. It was the first H3N2 - infected case in Vietnam with no signs of human-to-human infection. Since April 2011, there is not any other case, reported the MOH.However, due to the current expansion of the bird flu out-break in many localities across the country, the MOH warned relevant agencies and residents to strictly implement hygienic measures relating to poultry and animal slaughtering, and go to the hospital as soon as possible for treatment when there is any sign of being infected.

China's Li Na eyes the ball as she serves to Bulgaria's Tsvetana Pironkova during their first round match on February 7, 2012 at Pierre de Coubertin stadium in Paris, during the Paris' WTA tennis tournament.? (/AFP File Photo)WUHAN, China, March 20 () -- Chinese tennis player Li Na's hometown denied plans to remove a bronze statue of her from the local "Walk of Fame" amid controversy sparked by the outspoken star's comment about playing for herself, not her country."It is a groundless rumor and the statue will stay there," said Hu Zhijun, administrator of the Hankou Bund Park, a popular tourist destination in Wuhan, central China's Hubei province.Wuhan's version of Walk of Fame is part of the park on the northern bank of the Yangtze River and consists of 13 statues of world and Olympic champions born in the province.Li attended the unveiling of the statue of herself last year, after becoming the first Asian tennis player to win a singles Grand Slam title at the French Open. But a posting forwarded thousands of times on Sina Weibo, China's Twitter-like social networking site, said Wuhan had decided to remove the statue due to the "harmful effect" of Li's uninhibited comment."I always believe if you lie one time you have to use 10 times to recover that one lie. So I didn't want to do that," Li said last week after beating compatriot Zheng Jie at the Indian Wells tournament in California."I know if I say real things many people will hate me. But it doesn't matter. I'm happy."She added that "I'm only a tennis athlete. I'm not here for the country. I just play my tennis. I am just doing my job to try the best."Among Chinese athletes, Li is a rare personality, who speaks fluent English and appears comfortable in front of the international press. She is also well known for seldom mincing her words. She once complained to reporters about her husband's loud snore before major matches and asked the chair umpire to tell excited fans in the stands to keep quiet. But what she said this time sparked a wave of criticism and controversy back in China. Some say that she lacks love for her country and she couldn't have made achievements without training on the provincial and national teams in the past. Others argue that "playing tennis is Li Na's job and we all do our jobs for ourselves".Li, who joined the national team in 1999, quit the tightly-controlled state-run training system and started to train on her own in late 2008. Chinese media dubbed the move - a policy experiment for Chinese tennis players - "Fly Alone". Li said her main focus right now is on the Women's Tennis Association tour.Chinese tennis chief Sun Jinfang said, "That's just Li Na. She plays for herself because she makes a living by competing in international matches. But as a Chinese, she also represents China, of course."Li is not the first Chinese athlete to come under controversy for virtually telling it like it is.Chinese speed skater Zhou Yang, from a low-income family in north China, said she would make her parents live a better life, after winning a gold medal at the 2010 Winter Olympics. She was reportedly rebuked by officials from China's General Administration of Sport for failing to thank the country first."Why do athletes have to say they play for the country and thank the country first," said Zhou Yunqing, sociologist with Wuhan University. "Some people need to change their way of thinking."
COLOMBO, April 19 () -- Sri Lanka is to improve cancer treatment in the former war-ravaged northern parts where the disease increase rapidly, a government spokesman said Thursday. The Health Ministry is to construct a radiation treatment center and provide medical treatment equipment in Jaffna, a city in the northern tip of former conflict-ridden northern Sri Lanka, said cabinet spokesman Laskman Yapa Abeywardana.According to him, the number of patients increased from 3,044 in 2008 to 4,414 in 2010 in the northern peninsula."A total of 1.6 million U.S. dollars is to be collected with the support of a charity organization which has taken up the project," he said. The cancer treatment facility in Jaffna is to benefit patients in the Northern, North Western, North Central and Eastern provinces where patients have to make a day-long journey to the only public cancer hospital in Colombo, the national capital. In order to raise the fund, the charity organization comprising social workers, philanthropists and leading sportsman organized a 670-kilometer walk for 27 days.A study has revealed that changes in lifestyle and eating habits, due to growing urbanization, have given rise to cancer in Sri Lanka and it is estimated that country has 18,000 new cancer cases annually, 33 percent of them ending in death within a year.

chestnut ugg bootsby Abdul Haleem, Yangtze YanKABUL, April 17 () -- Amid peace efforts and the Afghan government's readiness to assume full security charge from the NATO-led forces, Taliban militants launched a multi-pronged offensive in the capital Kabul and three eastern cities over the weekend. The shaking incident which took many by surprise at home and abroad has raised the question whether the Afghan security force is able to ensure security after 2014 when the NATO-led multinational peacekeeping forces leaves the country."In fact, Taliban, by launching well-coordinated attacks in Kabul and other cities, demonstrated their ability as a fighting force to challenge security apparatus," local political analyst Musa Sazawar told  on Tuesday.Sazawar was of the view that Taliban by carrying out such bold offensive has rebuffed the notion that the outfit has been weakened as claimed by Afghan and NATO officials. He said that Taliban fighters would speed up their activities to degrade the credibility of the government forces right before the eyes of the public.According to Afghan officials, 37 fighters loyal to the Haqqani network, an insurgent group fighting against U.S.-led NATO forces and the Afghan government , were also involved in the bloody massive offensive. After an intense gun battle from Sunday afternoon till Monday morning in Kabul and other cities, 36 militants had been killed and another one made captive. The Haqqni network is the military wing of Taliban outfit, operating in capital Kabul and eastern region along the border with Pakistan's tribal areas.Taliban militants launched the biggest coordinated attacks as part of their "Spring Offensive" almost simultaneously in the fortified capital Kabul, Jalalabad city 120 km east, Gerdez 100 km south and Logar 60 km south of Kabul on Sunday afternoon. In the 18-hour heavy fighting, 51 people including 36 attackers had been killed and 74 others including 25 civilians sustained injures, officials said. The question among Afghans is how the over three dozen insurgents had passed through so many checkpoints and sneaked into the most-secured areas in Kabul and other cities with weaponry to stage such attacks. In Kabul, Afghan President Hamid Karzai has blamed intelligence failure for the terror attacks and ordered investigation. Afghan analysts also questioned the security measures of the government."The frailty and weakness of security apparatus had enabled Taliban to launch massive offensive," political analyst and former legislator Muin Marastial said in a television panel.Sunday's massive attacks took place just days after Karzai appointed a new chairman to the High Peace Council, a government- backed body negotiating with Taliban to find political settlement to the Afghan endemic conflict.Launching bold offensive at this stage once again showed Taliban's inflexibility towards government-initiated peace efforts and their ability to maneuver anytime, observers said."Taliban outfit is not strong but the weakness of security entities have facilitate them to penetrate into Kabul and other cities to launch terror attacks and terrorize the people," another political analyst Fazil Sangcharaki argued.Although the Afghan security forces had crashed the attackers in less than 20 hours, Afghans still worry whether their national security forces are capable of coping with the ongoing Taliban- led militancy and the getting situation under control after 2014 when the NATO-led forces leave the militancy-plagued nation. LONDON, March 30 () -- Respect Party candidate George Galloway took Labor Party's Bradford West parliamentary seat after winning over half of the votes in the by-election on Friday. In the former safe Labor constituency of Bradford West, Galloway, who has been a Member of Parliament (MP) twice before, won with 18,341 votes, 55.8 percent of those cast."By the grace of God, we have won the most sensational victory in British political history. Labor has been hit by a tidal wave in a seat they have held for many decades and dominated for 100 years. I have won a big victory in every part of the constituency," Galloway said in a speech just after his victory.Galloway is a maverick figure in British politics. He rose to prominence through the Labor Party in Scotland, and became the MP for a Scottish seat until he was ejected from the party in 2003 for urging British soldiers not to fight in the Iraq War.He stood for Respect, a left-wing party with strong connections in the Muslim community, in a safe Labor seat in London in the 2005 election and won, only to lose again in 2010.In Bradford West, Galloway stood on policies of opposition to any war against Iran, an immediate withdrawal of troops from the war in Afghanistan, and interventionist economic policies to reverse the effects of government austerity measures.Respect leader Salma Yaqoob said in a radio interview on Friday that the result showed public dissatisfaction with the government's austerity cuts."This message really is an anti-austerity one," Yaqoob said. The defeat has serious implications for the main opposition Labor Party, which are 10 points ahead in most national opinion polls but were so thoroughly defeated. It is a blow to Labor leader Ed Miliband, who has failed to develop the same personal lead over Prime Minister David Cameron in opinion polls as his party has over the other political parties. It also questions the economic policies of Labor, which voters in Bradford West saw as being too close to the government's austerity policies. There will be a 2.3-percent spending cut on average each year across all government departments (except health and foreign aid) between 2011 and 2015.
