RIO DE JANEIRO, June 27 () -- Brazil announced a 4 billion U.S. dollar (8.4 billion reais) stimulus package Wednesday to boost the nation's flagging economy, mostly through government purchases.Finance Minister Guido Mantega announced the measure, saying the move came as the financial crisis worsens in developed nations."The European crisis continues to get worse and it's causing global economic growth to fall," said Mantega. "With that in mind, the Brazilian government is taking stimulus measures so we can increase investment, increase demand, increase confidence, and accelerate our growth."Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff said on the same day that the crisis does not frighten Brazil, even though it is still a matter of concern.Brazil's growth has been gradually decelerating, registering just 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2012. In 2011, its GDP grew by 2.7 percent, the lowest among the BRICS emerging economy nations.Despite the deceleration, Mantega remained optimistic about seeing higher growth rates in the second half of 2012, predicting Brazil will grow more in 2012 than it did last year. The planned public sector purchases, which will give preference to Brazilian-made products, include a long list of items, from school desks and dialysis equipment to ambulances, armored vehicles and trucks. The package also includes construction, with plans to build or renovate school sports facilities and renew bus fleets. The government of President Dilma Rousseff is also offering a credit line through the Brazilian Development Bank (BNDES) to municipalities and states for the purchase of hospital equipment.
JAKARTA, June 15 () -- Indonesia's conversion program from oil-based fuel to gas-based fuel is expected to be completed in four to five years, a deputy minister said here on Friday, in support of the government's plan to allocate energy subsidy to build necessary infrastructure. The Indonesian government has attempted to shift the reliance from oil-based fuel whose reserve has dwindled to gas-based fuel whose reserve is abundant in the country.Currently the government has been building infrastructure facilities for the conversion program."It needs four to five years to build gas carrier facilities, terminals, and piping facilities," Deputy Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources Rudi Rubiandini said.Rubiandini said that the government had provided 50 million MMSCFD (million metric standard cubic feet per day) of gas this year to support the conversion project."The gas has been available in Papua, Kalimantan, and Natuna and the deep sea. But transportation infrastructure is needed," he said.Indonesia is the world's third largest gas exporter.According to data from oil and gas watchdog BPMigas, Indonesia' s crude oil production has fallen to less than 1 million barrels per day since 2007 because of aging wells and a natural decline in output. The outputs dropped to 954,000 bpd in 2007 from 1 million bpd in 2006. It fell to 949,000 bpd in 2009, 945,000 bpd in 2010 and 902,000 bpd in 2011.The decline is forecast to persist in the next two years -- 894, 000 bpd and 891,000 bpd for this year and 2013, respectively.
