We already started back-office investigations Sunday morning since the share price movements became identical," the report quoted Abdullah Salem Al Naimi, manager of market surveillance market operations at the Abu Dhabi Securities Exchange, known as ADX, as saying.Aldar Properties and Sorouh Real Estate, the sheikhdom of Abu Dhabi's two largest developers, advanced both by 7.9 percent in value on Sunday. After the market's closure, both firms announced Sunday evening that they entered merger talks.On Monday, both stocks advanced again in lockstep, by 9.8 percent, closing at the same price at 1.34 Dirham (0.36 U.S. dollar). Despite the announced talks, trading volumes have been low in both stocks Monday, which irritated traders likewise."There has never been a suspension of trading in Aldar and Sorouh on Monday. The lack of volume stemmed from the absence of offers," Sanyalak Manibhandu, a real estate analyst with National Bank of Abu Dhabi told .The ADX and the Securities and Commodities Authority (SCA), the UAE's market regulatory body reminded shareholders and traders on Monday of the fact that trading on regulations on insider information in the UAE, stating "anyone with privileged information about a public company or its material affairs -- known as insiders -- are banned from trading for a specific period before regulatory filings are made."The eyebrow-raising equality in price movements of Aldar and Sorouh shares came at a time when the UAE hopes to be upgraded to the level of "emerging market" from "frontier market" by global index developer MSCI later this year.The MSCI plans to examine in June 2012, whether or not the two local UAE stock exchanges in Dubai and Abu Dhabi fulfill improved standards of transparency, efficiency and integrity in order to be regarded as bourses of an emerging market.In 2011, the MSCI refused to upgrade the UAE two times, in June and in December. An upgrade could attract more international investors to the UAE, as fund managers with a focus on MSCI emerging markets would have to rebalance their portfolios by buying UAE-listed stocks.If a merger between Aldar and Sorouh materializes, it would be the largest merger in the UAE since 2007 when then Dubai-based lenders Emirates Bank International and National Bank of Dubai joined forces to become today's UAE biggest bank Emirates NBD.The combined assets of Aldar and Sorouh stood at 13.6 billion Dirham (3.7 billion dollars) as of Dec. 21 2011, according to figures compiled by Gulf News.Aldar has developed the Formula one circuit and Ferrari World, a family leisure theme park dedicated to the Italian luxury car producer on Yas Island, while Sorouh is currently building Shams Abu Dhabi, a master development for 45,000 people on Al Reem island near the UAE capital.
