Bring our nation the glory because we are looking forward to a good medal tally," Kibaki said in Nairobi.The championships include the London Olympic and Paralympics Games, the world junior championships in Barcelona, Spain and the Deaf World Athletics Championships in Toronto, Canada.Kibaki urged the teams to focus on scooping as many medals as possible, saying victory will project Kenya's supremacy in the sporting arena."We look forward to the playing of the Kenyan national anthem as many times as possible during the various events. These events symbolize excellence in sport. We take great pride, as a nation, to compete in them," he said.Saying the national flag symbolizes Kenya's nationhood and gives the team a national identity throughout the games, Kibaki saluted all past and present sporting heroes who have raised the flag high.He observed that Kenyan sportsmen and women have always fought gallantly and brought the country fame and glory in the international sports arena."The challenge ahead of you, therefore, is to emulate those who were there before you, and put our country in the international limelight," Kibaki told the teams.He encouraged the Kenyan teams to perform well at the Olympics and Paralympics and Deaf Games, saying the victory will earn them a place in sports history which can never be erased.Kenya Olympics Committee Chairman Dr. Kipchoge Keino said gold medallists will be awarded 12,000 U.S. dollars, silver medallists 7,000 dollars while bronze medallists will be awarded 3,570 dollars.Keino said other corporate organizations including Mabati Rolling Mills have also pledge hefty awards to the medallists. The government has been running a cash incentive award scheme for Kenyan sportsmen and women for the last seven years.Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Paul Otuoma said a Sports Bill developed by his ministry and approved by Cabinet was ready for debate in Parliament.The Bill once passed into law, the minister noted, will create a National Sports Fund to manage a national sports lottery that would augment government budgetary allocations to the sports sector.Otuoma also said the government was forging partnerships with private institutions to rehabilitate sports facilities across the country. The minister reassured that the selection of the teams to the four international sports championships was done transparently.During the ceremony, Kibaki advised the Kenyan teams to the London Olympics and Paralympics, Barcelona world junior championships and Deaf Games in Toronto to re-dedicate themselves to national duty and remain true patriots.He also urged them to be confident and maintain high standards of discipline as a weapon of success. We need to largely improve the level of title events and demonstration events alike to help the Ethnic Games develop in a healthy way."The country's first Ethnic Games was inaugurated in 1953 in Tianjin, North China's important port city. And it was also the first ever multi-sports event of the world's most populous country.After an abeyance of 29 years, the second games was held in Hohhot of Inner Mongolia in 1982. All the performers of the "Axilixi" show in the Games come from the Ethnic Middle School of Hezhang County in Bijie and most of them are students."Our performances are warmly-welcomed, which encouraged the students a lot," said Wang Enguo, an adminstration staff from the school who also took part in the "Axilixi" show in Guiyang. "The National Ethnic Games is really helpful for the introduction and promotion of ethnic culture and sports events. It provides a platform to show the charm of these culture treasures.""We are teaching our culture to the youth in classroom. Like in the PE course which I used to taught, we teach them traditional ethnic sports like the Yi-style wrestling, top-flipping and swing," Wang added.Like the Wang's school, a lot of elementary and middle schools in China have included ethnic sports into their curriculum. And specialities of ethnic sports are also established in the Minzu University of China and Beijing Sports Universities.According to Tondrub Wangbum, some dancing-related demo events can also be promoted into the national fitness project and exercised by the public in parks and squares.In 1995, China adopted the "Physical Health Law of the People's Republic of China".
